Questions About Our Clinic

Where is your clinic located?

We are located at Unionville Mews Plaza, 4568 Highway 7, in Unionville. This is on the NORTH side of Highway 7 approximate 500 feet WEST of Kennedy Road. The Ontario drivers license office is at the same plaza.

What are your hours of operation?

A caregiver is on site with your pet 24 hour a day, 7 days per week. We are open to admit and discharge patients on Monday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday closed Outside these hours our caregivers will gladly refer you to the closest after hour emergency clinic. In case there is a problem with pets that are already admitted into the hospital during regular hours our caregivers have the backup of our doctors 24 hours per day.

What do I do in the case of an emergency and your clinic isn’t open?

Emergencies that happen out of hours will be referred to a Veterinary Emergency Clinic close to your home. One is located in North York on Sheppard Ave. and Bayview (416) 226-3663 and another is in Aurora on Yonge Street and Aurora Road (905) 713-2323.

Why do you have password-protected areas on your website?

Our professional governing body requires that we have a veterinary client relationship with individuals before communicating certain information to them. These are the areas that require you to enter your client password.

How do I get my password?

If you are a client of our clinic, you may obtain your client password by calling our clinic directly at 905-477-2323 or 1-800-729-0611 Our staff will confirm your association as a client and provide you with the password.

What happens to my pets in the hospital after you are closed?

We never leave your pet alone in the dark. In our hospital all pets are cared for by a caregiver who looks after your pet at all times - 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. This is quite uncommon in Ontario since the minimum standards for Companion Animal Hospitals do not require supervision overnight. Years ago before we had staff on site 24 hours, we rolled often sleeplessly in bed worrying whether really all animals were ok in the cages. Of course we never would have left a critically ill patient in the hospital overnight and we would have referred him to the emergency clinic overnight. That was not a great solution however, since the owner had to pick the pet up at the emergency clinic the following morning and drive him back to us, just to possibly repeat the same trip in the reverse direction in the evening again. But what if an almost healthy animal got into trouble overnight? What if it vomited and no-one was there to clean the cage? What if the intravenous fluid stopped running and needed an attendant? What if the patient started licking its operation site until it was sore? What if the pet could not hold it any longer and had to go to the washroom in the cage? What if there was any medication to be given at 2:00 a.m.? We had no good answers for these questions. That’s why we hired staff who walk your dog when s/he needs to go out and give all medications and treatments when they are scheduled - even after midnight. Cages, bedding and cat litter pans get cleaned right away when soiled and our telephone gets answered by a real person. Our doctors are on call 24 hours to assist our caregiver with all pets on premises, whether they are patients in the hospital or boarding with us. At this time we are however not available to admit emergencies that happen after hours. Our caregiver will refer you to the closest veterinary emergency clinic.

Isn’t every veterinary clinic/animal hospital in Ontario staffed 24 hours a day?

Unfortunately NO! In fact it is quite uncommon for veterinary clinics or animal hospitals in Ontario to have staff on site 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The minimum standards for Companion Animal Hospitals in Ontario do not require supervision overnight.

Is it possible to tour the facililty or to visit my pet while it is in your care?

Absolutely - yes. We have an open door policy during our regular hours. Visitors and tours are welcome, we are proud to show our facility and arrange tours for larger groups. It is a little like checking out the kitchen of a restaurant before you sit down to dine. You will want to see where your pet is going to stay and meet the people who will be caring for him. So please come and meet us personally.

Why should I spay or neuter my pet?

The most important reason is to control the population of unwanted pets. You may be able to find homes for your puppies or kittens, however, the people that obtain your animals may have otherwise adopted and saved the life of an animal at the local humane society. There are many health benefits to neutering and spaying your pet as well. It will ensure that your pet will have a better chance to live it’s life to its full potential. Spaying before the first heat almost eliminates the risk of mammary tumors -breast cancer- while a high percentage of non-spayed female dogs will develop breast cancer and you can greatly reduce the chance of your male dog developing prostatic disease by neutering him at a young age. Spaying and neutering help to prevent all sex hormone related tumors, problems and sex hormone related undesirable behaviors. Please feel free to contact us for further information on this subject.
