General Medical

The goal of any medical discipline is prevention, rapid and accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Veterinary medicine is fundamentally not different from human medicine.  The same principles apply to our profession.  Our patients are very similar to human patients, they have a comparable anatomy and physiology.  One big difference is that people tend to tell the doctor about their problems and why they are seeking medical help, while animals always need a human being that notices when there are problems.  Veterinary medicine is a little more comparable to pediatric medicine.  Your 2 year old cannot tell you what is wrong or where it hurts, but you can sense that something is not alright.  Animals have as much pain and sensation as people. It is up to people to learn how to recognize the signs of illness and pain in animals.

We are challenged daily to paint a complete picture about the health of a patient from a number of little puzzle pieces - it is comparable to detective work.  A medical assessment needs to be done in a systematic and logical way.
